CELEBRATING AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY
4TH OF JULY IN LATE JUNE
2023
Sachi G. Dastidar
We all know
that independence of the First nation ruled by its people is 4th of
July. But then again, that path for all nation can be celebrated every day of
365 days. So, many celebrations in the U.S. start earlier. New York City has a
big fireworks based of the middle of East River, at times at the middle of Hudson
River done by Macy’s department store. In Queens, for many years a fire work
celebration took place on the bay close to the Throngs Neck Bridge., sponsored
by the local N.Y.C Councilwoman, Historical Society, and many others. Covid
prevented people getting together for the past four years until 2023 opened it
for all. It was held at the Fort Totten military area, on top of a hill with
clear view of the bay and the bridge connecting New York City’s Borough of
Queens and Bronx borough. It was wonderful to see a sea of humanity participating the nation's independence. There must have been over hundreds of thousands of people.
People
started to arrive from late afternoon, although the fireworks was to be held
after dark. For early arrivals it was not easy as the nearby parking lot was
shut down, and city offered bus ride from a nearby shopping center. Our family
of three generations was lucky as a young Hispanic family with kids gave them a
parking spot at a parking area under the bridge, possibly a mile from the Fort.
The Fort also offered ride in a bus from the entrance to the fort to the
hilltop for the visitors. Fromm late afternoon started music program, playing
by the kids, and visiting temporary built eateries. Weather was nice, and
Mother Nature avoided rain.
Here are a
few pictures of the celebration starting in daylight and ending at night.
