A hard-working indigenous Hindu monk Sunil Maharaj of Muslim-majority Bangladesh achieved a remarkable attainment by buying a property adjacent to his ashram (hermitage), to serve the poor and the dirt-poor oppressed peoples. Sunil Maharaj came in contact with Probini Foundation of New York as he tried to develop a school where nothing existed in early 1990s, but a space connected with the famous spiritual person of Swami Pranabananda of nearby Faridpur District, who was also a fighter for India’s freedom from British oppression. Britain colonials imprisoned Swami Pranabananda many times for His non-violent freedom fight. Probini helped Sunil Maharaj to start a secular school.
The
ashram is located in the northern part of the deltaic coastal district, one of
the remotest places of the country. The hard-working young monk gradually built
school, hostel, shrine, health clinic, visitor center, shelter, kitchen and lot
more, open to all. It gradually became a tourist site and pilgrimage center. He
helped rebuild a school completely destroyed by hurricane in the nearby Doihari
island.
As more
and more locals depended on the ashram, and need for the poor elderly and
homeless grew, a property adjacent to the ashram became available, but it was
too expensive for the poor monk. Complicating his life, the owner of the
property refused to sell it to the ashram, but to an important local. Swamiji then
tried to buy the property from the new owner to fulfill the need of the locals.
Large numbers of locals came forward to help raise funds that ran into tens of
millions of takas or tens of thousands of dollars. Several New Yorkers also donated
to the project to help the poor.
This
is a remarkable achievement since the British-created racist partitions of
India and its Bengal Province in 1947.
The
property was handed over to the ashram in November of 2023. And, the pioneering,
heart turning journey began!
They had to borrow to complete the deal before a deadline. In case anyone wants to help the project, kindly contact the monk.
