The Probini Foundation of New York, U.S.A., helped build a school and hostel decades ago at Tuichawng, Mizoram, one of the remotest and deprived places in India and on earth, inhabited by wonderful Chakma peoples. Many Chakmas were driven out from their homes at Chittagong Hills in Bangladesh. (At Chittagong Hills district in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, the Buddhist Chakma population is down from 98% at 1947 India Partition to barely 25% or 30% now in 2026.) It is distant. One must go around Bangladesh through mountainous roads through Assam and Meghalaya states of Northeast India. Traveling from Kolkata to Mizoram circling Bangladesh can easily take 2 to 3 days or more. However, a flight from Kolkata to capital Aizawl is time saving. Probini started helping them after their appeal to Probini. I visited the area at my cost decades ago to see the mountainous place. It is wonderful to see their survival and growth from 2000 to 2026. (We have read in the paper that the current federal Indian Delhi government has developed better roads reaching its remotest place.) For more information, please check out our blogs, Empire’s Last Casualty: Tuichawng, Mizoram, India (2013); and New Year 2024 Celebration at Mahabodhi School, Tuichawng, Mizoram, India (2025).

Secretary & Teacher Mr. Sudip Chakma (Left) and UTPM President & Headmaster Mr. Rajesh Chakma (2013)

It is wonderful to see through 2026 pictures as the locals have developed a better economy and survival model.

As they asked me for further help, I told Sri Sudip Chakma that after Shefali and my 50th anniversary, I will help as our 50th celebration. Thus, as soon as I finished our celebratory party on December 14, 2025, I discussed my financial donation with Sudip and money donation began.

Here are some pictures from Sudip of redevelopment of the dining, kitchen and storage after our funding:

Here are some emails from Tuichawng, Mizoram:

Namaskar 🙏 and warm greetings.

Thank you so much for your kind encouragement. We will move forward as planned.

We respectfully convey our namaskar and hello to everyone on your behalf.

The tin sheets are being procured from the nearby market at Demagiri, which is about 19 km from Tuichawng village. It is the most convenient and economical option for us.

With gratitude and best wishes, Sudip

Respected Sir, Warm greetings to you.

We are very happy to share a joyful update with you. With your kind support and generous help, we have successfully completed the renovation by changing the old roofs of our village primary school. This has given great relief and safety to our children and teachers.

Now, we are also underway in making proper classroom partitions, which we did not have before. Earlier, teaching was very difficult because of noise and disturbance from other classes. After this work is completed, our teachers will be able to teach peacefully, and students can learn with better concentration.

All these positive changes are possible only because of your kindness and support. The school, teachers, students, and the whole village are deeply grateful to you.

Thank you once again for standing with our underprivileged children and supporting education.

With respect and gratitude, Sudip Chakma

It is worth mentioning that some of our friends attending our 50th anniversary at Long Island New York’s Baldwin Kali Mandir Temple Party Hall did not break our request for not bringing any gift, flowers and even a card, but left some donation with Dilip in our absence as we were busy at the platform/dais. Those donors are Prof. Dr. Dwijen & Pratiti Bhattacharjee, Mrs. Subhra Goswami, Prof. Dr. Minna Barrett, Sitangshu Bikash Guha, Dr. Bhola Banik M.D., Prof. Dr. Alireza Ebrahimi, Mrs. Nandita Bagchi, Prof. Dr. Mahatapa Palit, Khurshed & Saleha Islam, Dr. Kora Mani (for Probini), Lorne & Candida Birch (for Probini), Amitabha Chatterjee, Anil Gupta, and Amrish Kapoor. I added our anniversary fund with that.
